La longue marche du caméléon by the renowned director from Burkina Faso Idrissa Ouédraogo is a segment of the long feature THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences, produced by ART for The World in 2010 under the auspices of the Alliance of Civilizations and the Council of Europe.

Inspired by the art. 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion", the short movie is focused on the theme of syncretism of beliefs.

Idrissa Ouedraogo won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival (1993) and the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival (1990), besides many other recognitions in worldwide festivals. He also participated with the short movie La Mangue in our film project Stories on Human Rights (2008).

Carnaval dos Deuses by Tata Amaral is a short movie produced by ART for The World and co-produced by SESC Sao Paulo in 2010.
The short is a segment of the collective film project THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences produced by ART for The World under the auspices of the Alliance of Civilizations and the Council of Europe and inspired by article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion".

The short movie by Tata Amaral focuses on the topic of the syncretism of beliefs and tolerance investigating how it is possible to represent the cultural and religious mixtures and the multiple forms of belief which come from diverse sources and which emerge from a completely different historical background.

Interviewed on Carnaval dos Deuses, Tata Amaral said:

“I worked with children ages 6 to 8 that, gathered in a middle class or lower middle class school in São Paulo, get to know and deal with religious differences. These children have diverse cultural and religious origins, as happens a lot in Brazil: Catholics, Jews, Umbanda and Santo Daime practitioners live in harmony. But how do the children understand religion and/or religious practices of their parents?

The fuse of my movie is Leon’s narrative to his friends about the Jewish ceremony Brit Milah (circumcision) for his newborn brother. Impressed, the boys discover evenness and differences in religious practices to which they came in contact with: Christmas, Hanukkah, Twelfth Night, Umbanda rituals and Buddhism. Leon reveals, at his manner, that his father is Jewish and his mother is Catholic, and both attend Ayahuasca ritual.

In a small microcosm such as a children’s school, we find the presence of different religions and rituals, narrated and meaning through the eyes and comprehension of such children. To them, differences are curiosity and not a reason for disagreements.

Children’s narrative is punctuated with images of the rites described. Such images, half-fantasy half-reality, end up in a big pantheism party, almost like a Carnival”.

The Accordion by Jafar Panahi has been selected for the competition "Confrontations-Making a Difference" at the 27th Interfilm Short Film Festival in Berlin, one of the most important short film festivals in Europe and the oldest international film festival in Berlin after the Berlinale.
The competition "Confrontations-Making a Difference" features short movies focusing on social injustice, intolerance and violence, just some of the themes that confront us every day in the media. The aim of the competition is to present stories - such as The Accordion - focusing on people on the margins of society, everyday heroes and those whose lives are dominated by external influences.

The short movie What About Me? by the renowned Israeli filmmaker and writer Etgar Keret will be screened at the presence of the author at the Théatre de l'Odéon in Paris on October 17. The screening has been organized on the occasion of the presentation of Keret's new book "Au pays des mensonges".
What About Me? was shot in 2008 within our collective film project Stories on Human Rights and co-directed with his wife Shira Geffen.

Etgar Keret is one of the most internationally acclaimed Israeli writer. He earned international recognition in 2007 with his film Jellifish, co-directed with Shira Geffen, and winning the Caméra d'or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The short movie Black Breakfast (2010) by Jia Zhang-ke will be screened at the Festival International du Film de la Roche-sur-Yon (France) on Octobre 13-18, 2011.
The short movie will be part of the extensive retrospective dedicate to the Chinese director.

Jia Zhang-ke is considered a leading figure of the "Sixth Generation" of Chinese directors. He has received critical praise and has been recognized internationally, notably winning the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion for Still Life in 2006. His films treat themes of alienated youth, contemporary Chinese history and globalization, and are characterized by the usage of a long-take, colorful digital video and a minimalist style.

Black Breakfast was shot in 2008 in China, as part of the collective film project Stories on Human Rights, inspired by the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and focusing in particular on the theme of environment.

Suite à une nouvelle offensive de la police secrète du régime iranien contre les milieux du cinéma, sept artistes de renommée ont été arrêtés durant le dernier week-end.
Il s’agit de Mojtaba MIRTAHMASB (réalisateur), Nasser SAFFARIAN (réalisateur), Hadi AFARIDEH (réalisateur), Mohsen SHAHNAZDAR (journaliste et documentariste), Shahnam BAZDAR (réalisateur), Mehrdad ZAHEDIAN (réalisateur) et Katayoune SHAHABI (productrice de cinéma).
Mojtaba MIRTAHMASB est co-réalisateur, avec Jafar PANAHI, de Ceci n’est pas un film, qui sort en salles en France le 28 septembre 2011.

Ces artistes ont été arrêtés chez eux ou dans leurs bureaux.

Les agences de presse liées au gouvernement iranien ont publié une information selon laquelle les correspondants de la BBC à Téhéran auraient été arrêtés. Les médias gouvernementaux tentent d’accréditer une version selon laquelle les cinéastes indépendants iraniens arrêtés seraient des espions au service de la BBC.
Selon les dernières nouvelles, les cinéastes qui viennent d’être arrêtés ont été transférés à la section 209 de la prison Evin à Téhéran.

Parmi les récentes victimes de la répression en Iran, figurent de nombreuses femmes artistes arrêtées ces dernières semaines.

Hüseyin Karabey is also the artistic director and one of the producers of the collective film Do not forget me Istanbul that will be screened on July 28-29 in the Focus Section of the Festival. Varsenik Khatlamajyan is a young Armenian artist who lives and works in Yerevan.
In 2000 she was selected for a scholarship at the KulturKontakt Foundation in Vienna and in 2002 she attended the Corso Superiore di Arte Vsiva at the Fondazione Ratti in Como (Italy). Her work has been exhibited, besides Armenia, in Belgrade, Frankfurt (in the contest of Manifesta 4), Salzburg, Como and Milan.

Varsenik is currently ART for The World's artist in residence in Venice at Palazzo Zenobio.

In 2010 ART for The World produced The Accordion (here in its English version), the short film by Jafar Panahi before he was arrested together with his family and crew in early 2010.
Presented in September 2010 in the context of the Venice Film Festival, the short film has already partecipated in more than 30 film festivals around the world.
The Accordion is a perfect message of tolerance and solidarity to a regime that was always and still is hostile to his work and to himself as an artist.

A group show of well known international artists inspired by Mediterranean croassroads of peoples and languages. The Mediterranean Sea, birthplace of Western civilization and the gate to the East, consists for the artists in a route towards knowledge and creativity.

The "piano nobile" of Palazzo Zenobio will host between June and September 2011, the artworks (paintings, sculptures, videos, photos, installations) of prominent artists from Spain, UK, Italy, France, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, Albania, Israel, Turkey and Libanon. Among them Ghada Amer, Ziad Antar, Faouzi Bensaidi, Marie Bovo, David Casini, Isaac Julien, Huseyin Karabey, Ange Leccia, Adrian Paci, Maria Papadimitriou Zineb Sedira, Gel Weinstein and Peter Wuethrich.

The long feature THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences will be released in March 2011.
The omnibus film is composed by 7 short movies by TATA AMARAL, FANNY ARDANT, HUSEYIN KARABEY, MASBEDO, IDRISSA OUEDRAOGO, JAFAR PANAHI, ROBERT WILSON, with the general soundtrack by MICHAEL GALASSO.
Inspired by Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion", the short movies are based on the themes of non violence, tolerance and respect for differences.

Première:
- International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), Geneva, on March 7, at the theater l'Alhambra, at the presence of the directors Fanny Ardant and Hüseyn Karabey, as well as of Mrs Rakel Dink.
The screening (60 min. approximately) will be followed by a discussion on Article 18.

The Accordion at the Berlinale

Few months ago, Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick has invited Jafar Panahi to join the International Jury of the 61st Berlin International Film Festival (10-20 February, 2011).

Shortly after, the renowned Iranian director was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from filmmaking for the next 20 years.

Ever since, people have been protesting worldwide against this verdict and the Berlinale is holding a place open in the Jury for Jafar Panahi to signalize its support for his struggle for freedom.

In the contest of the Berlinale, ARTE will dedicate a special screening on February 16 to the Iranian director presenting his most recent short movie The Accordion, that will be broadcast paralley on ARTE TV channel, as well as his movie The Circle.

The Festival will also dedicate special screenings to other four movies of the director (Offside, Crimson Gold, The White Balloon, Untying the Knot ), one in each of several sections to call attention to the artist’s extraordinary oeuvre.

Freedom of expression and thought has been increasingly facing serious problems and suffering more and more pressure. Totalitarian governments have been increasing pressure and censorship using unbelievable pretexts not acceptable by anyone who has dignity. Artists and intellectuals trying to express themselves have been forced to live in more and more difficult conditions. Governments all over the world have been trying to legitimize their repressive systems by deliberately sacrificing freedoms to a security problem.

One of the latest examples has been in Iran. Iranian directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof have faced the government’s pressure and isolation. Panahi has been sentenced to six years in prison and banned for twenty years of writing, directing, producing and giving interviews. Rasoulof has been sentenced to six years in prison for “opposition”.

We consider these sentences as one of the most actual examples of a government’s pressure on the individual and we oppose it.

We, as the Turkish film-makers, condemn this terror and pressure on Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasoulof and on all Iranian film-makers who suffer. We declare to the world that we will keep on watching closely this issue until it will be resolved.

We support the decision of directors Tayfun Pirselimoglu and Pelin Esmer for their decision of withdrawing their films from Fajr Film Festival as an act of protest.

To demonstrate our support, we will dedicate our films that we will make this year to Iranian film-makers. We will work as hard as we can to lay bare all the reality that totalitarian regimes have been trying to hide.

We see each frame through the eyes of Iranian film-makers under pressure.

Acclaimed Iranian director Jafar Panahi was jailed in Tehran this past March. In May, after a hunger strike and an international campaign, Mr Panahi was freed on a one hundred and eighty five thousand dollar bail. Mr Panahi was back in court on November 7, and his defense statement was released. Here are few excerpts.

"(…) I have learned how to make films inspired by those outstanding films that the prosecutor deemed obscene. Believe me I have just as much difficulty understanding how they could be called obscene as I do comprehending how the activity for which I was arrested could be seen as a crime? My case is a perfect example of being punished before committing a crime. You are putting me on trial for making a film that at the time of our arrest was only thirty per cent shot. You must have heard that the famous creed "There is no god, except Allah”, turns into blasphemy if you only say the first part and omit the second part. In the same vain, how can you establish that a crime has been committed by looking at 30% of rushes for a film that have not been edited yet (...) The assassination of ideas and sterilizing artists of a society has only one result: killing the roots of art and creativity. Arresting my colleagues and I while shooting an unfinished film is nothing but an attack by those in power on all the artists of this land. It drives this crystal clear however sad message home: “You will repent if you don't think like us”(...) All said, despite all the injustice done to me, I, Jafar Panahi, declare once again that I am an Iranian, I am staying in my country and I like to work in my own country. I love my country, I have paid a price for this love too, and I am willing to pay again if necessary. I have yet an other declaration to add to the first one. As shown in my films , I declare that I believe in the right of “the other” to be different, I believe in mutual understanding and respect, as well as in tolerance; the tolerance that forbid me from judgment and hatred (…)".

On Sunday, October 10th, ART for The World presented RESPIRO (BREATH), a new exhibition in the city of Vicenza in collaboration with Fondazione Zoé.

In the contest of the second edition of the festival Vivere Sani, Vivere Bene - four days of events and conferences on the theme of health, with a special focus on breath - RESPIRO is a collective exhibition that take places in four different venues of the city, featuring video installations, audio and video projections and a selections of billboards on the theme of breath from different perspective: diving, blow, apnea, soul, sleep, silence…

Respiro is the prosecution of a collaboration between ART for The World and Zambon Group started in 1998 at the occasion of The Edge of Awareness, a travelling exhibition with large installations and billboards by international artists organized for the 50th Anniversary of the OMS and focused on the theme of physical and mental health.

At the world premiere in Venice on September 1, the short movie The Accordion by Jafar Panahi has been very well received and acclaimed both by the audience and international press.
The short movie has been screeneed at the Sala Darsena at the presence of the film delegation and more than 1.300 viewers.

After a short introducion by Giorgio Gosetti, General Delegate of Venice Days, Mazdak Taebi - the Iranian filmmaker based in Toronto and close friend of Panahi - read the touching message written on pourpose and sent to him by Jafar Panahi, who eventually couldn't attend the screening since he is still banned to travel outside his country.

On that occasion ART for The World, Venice Days and Dorje Film launched a new petition in order to accrue signatures: we all strongly condemn the illegal action towards Jafar Panahi by the Islamic Government of Iran and demand to let him travel freely and join us for the next screenings of his movie.

Venice Days and the NGO ART for The World – producer of the film THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences on the art.18 of the UDHR (freedom of expression) which includes Jafar Panahi’s The Accordion – together express their total solidarity for the Iranian director’s freedom to accompany his film to the opening of Venice Days 2010 on September 1.

Panahi today said once again that he trusts he will be able to come to Venice, 10 years after winning the Golden Lion that consolidated his international success, for The Circle. “My new short film,” he says, “is an auspice for tolerance and the capacity for comprehension.”

Jafar Panahi has been invited to open the Giornate degli Autori/Venice Days at the 67th edition of the Venice Film Festival with the World Premiere of his latest short movie
The Accordion. The screening will take place on September 1st
at the Venice Lido's Palazzo del Cinema.

The Accordion - produced by ART for The World and shot in Tehran - is focused on two young street musicians who play the accordion and the tablas in order to earn their living. One day, while they are playing next to a mosque, their accordion is taken away from them due to an accident…
This brief and forceful tale, dealing with the theme of Non-Violence, portrays the Iranian director's entire artistic world and is a metaphor for the new generations who, led by understanding, prefer solidarity over conflicts.

On September 2nd a special pannel with Jafar Panahi and his friend, the Iranian actor and filmmaker Mazdak Taebi shall take place on the topics treated in his work, with the participation of international media, as well as a Masterclass with young cinephiles from all EU countries.

The Accordion is part of our collective film production THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences. The project - based on the article 18 of the UDHR "Everybody has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion" - aims to showcase shared beliefs and peaceful coexistence among the world major religions. Initiated by UN's Alliance of Civilizations and under the patronage of the Council of Europe, the long feature will bring together approx. 15 short-movies by renowned filmmakers and will be presented at the Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva, in early March 2011.

The Accordion will be also presented at the Montreal World Film Festival on September 4th, at the occasion of the director's retrospective.

In 2005, Adelina von Fürstenberg funded in Milan in the premises of NABA (New Academy of Fine Art) in via Darwin 20, ART for The World Europa, the sister NGO of Geneva based ART for The World.
Since then, and until 2008, it started a close collaboration with Hangar Bicocca, a space dedicated to international contemporary art located in a former industrial building.

ART for The World Europa curated the following exhibitions in the venue of Hangar Bicocca:

PLAYGROUNDS AND TOYS
28th October - 23rd December 2005

Since 2000, travelling in the museums all over the world, from Geneve to Rome, New York, Lugano, London, Paris, Montecarlo and Bruxelles, the exhibition Playgrounds and Toys was the first art project of Art for The World Europa in Milan at Hangar Bicocca in October 2005.
It showed models of playgrounds and educational toys created by artists, architects and designers from all over the world. The aim of this project, launched on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2000, is to provide concrete help to children who suffer from social injustice or live in unacceptable conditions even in the urban context.

Marina Abramovic’s BALKAN EPIC

The exhibition has been conceived as a spectacular journey into Marina Abramovic' work.
In particular, it showed, for the first time, the multi-channel installation Balkan Erotic Epic, based on Abramovic's research into Balkan folk culture and its use of erotic. According to her, “It is through eroticism that the human tries to make himself equal with the gods: 'In folklore, people believed that in the erotic there was something superhuman that doesn't come from him but from the gods. Obscene objects and male and female genitals have a very important function in the fertility and agricultural rites of Balkan peasants' '. Balkan Erotic Epic belongs to a series of works that reflect Abramovic's Serbian origins, also including the installations 'Balkan Baroque' and 'Count on Us' as well as the single-channel works 'The Hero' and 'Tesla Urn', which are also included in the exhibition, together with Nude with Skeleton, a still-life that focus on the relationship between life and death.

Artists: Cory Arcangel, Pierre Bismuth, Candice Breitz, Brice Dellsperger, Charles de Meaux, Omer Fast, Thomas Galler, Liam Gillick & Philippe Parreno, Christoph Girardet & Matthias Müller, Pierre Huyghe, Runa Islam, Mike Kelley, Dimitris Kozaris, Melik Ohanian, Carola Spadoni Clemens von Wedemeyer

Co-curated with Anna Daneri and Andrea Lissoni, COLLATERAL, shows the relationships and mutual influence between art and cinema. It offers a journey where works by artists from different generations and backgrounds are shown next to the founding figures of the medium. Some are more connected to the tradition of “cult” cinema, some more to that of video art, some to an installation in the exhibition space, and some more to experimental cinema.
The installation, designed by architect Andreas Angelidakis, creates a space of screens and projections, a huge Plato’s cave with geometric objects emitting a soft light from inside. Each work is housed in a open screening room, a dark cave with three walls and side opposite the projection left open. Visitors can enter each of these caves and enjoy the film in darkness or step outside and study from far away.

The exhibition presents the works of 15 emblematic Indian artists and reveals the striking contradictions of contemporary India.
The artists who have been invited to Milan are sculptors, painters and video artists whose works are inspired by the issues that distinguish Indian society, such as immigration, environmental protection, the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the loss of traditional values, and poverty and wealth in a globalised world.
These works are modern, yet also filled with tradition. As a result, they powerfully express the two souls of contemporary India, where spirituality and the material world, underdevelopment and brand-new technology live together in a fragile balance. The installation was designed by architect Uliva Velo.

Cannes 2010: Apichatpong Weerasethakul Wins Palme d'Or and Mahamat Saleh Haroun Wins Jury Prize

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul won the prestigious Palme d'Or at Cannes 2010.
Concerning the award, Tim Burton, president of the jury, commented: “The world is getting smaller and more westernised, more Hollywood-ised and this is a film where I felt I was watching from another country. It was using fantasy elements but in a way I'd never seen before so I just felt it was like a beautiful, strange dream."
Accepting the Palm d'Or, Weerasethakul said: "I would like to thank all the spirits and all the ghosts in Thailand who made it possible for me to be here."

In 2008, ART for The World had the pleasure to work with Apichatpong Weerasethakul. He shooted Mobile Men, one of 22 short-movies from the long-feature film Stories on Human Rights, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Un homme qui crie (A Screaming Man) by Mahamat Saleh Haroun won the Jury Prize.

"I come from a country where little exists," said Haroun on receiving his prize. "In this desert-like context I learnt one thing: you have to make films the way you'd prepare dishes for the people you love."

The Chadian director is going to shoot a short-film produced by ART for The World for the long-film THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences.

The production has started in spring 2010 and will be launched in 2011.

Chimères Absentes by Fanny Ardant
The short tells the story of Sonietcka, a Roma child who is not allowed to eat at the school refectory, because of her family's condition of poverty. Fanny Ardant, who plays a role in the short, has been filming in the historical centre of Formello, a village close to Rome, with professional actors and Roma people.

Chimères Absentes is associated with the Council of Europe Dosta! Campaign against prejudices and stereotypes towards Roma in Europe.

Distante un padre (A Far Away Father) by Masbedo (Nicolò Massazza and Jacopo Bedogni), artists and videomakersm turn an intimate tragedy like the seath of a child into a universal drama. In particular, they focuse on the delicate relationship among life, death and after.

La longue marche du caméléon (The Long March of a Chamaleon) by Idrissa Ouédraogo examines the role of traditions and superstitions of the Animistic practices in Africa. According to the tradition, the chamaleon anticipates a bad luck premonition. If someone offends a chamaleon, his gesture will be punished.

Carneval dos Deuses (Gods Carnival) by Tata Amaral deals with the syncretism of beliefs. While making costumes for Carnival, a group of Brazilian children speak about the rituals they practice within their family: Christmas, Hanukkah, Twelth Night, Umbanda rituals, Buddhism. The starting-point of the conversation is Leon's description of Brit Milah, the Jewish ceremony of circumcision.

Following the worldwide success of the film Stories on Human Rights, produced on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Art for The World – under the auspicies of the Council of Europe and the UN Alliance of Civilizations – is producing its second collective film project, entitled THEN AND NOW Beyond Borders and Differences.

So far, the first series of five short-movies by Masbedo (Italy), Idrissa Ouédraogo (Burkina Faso), Tata Amaral (Brazil), Robert Wilson (USA) and Fanny Ardant (France), will be screened at a world “avant-première” in Brazil: in Sao Paulo, on May 24 2010 at Cinesesc, and in Rio de Janeiro, on May 27, at the Museum of Modern Art, on the occasion of the opening of 3° Forum of UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Liberté pour Jafar Panahi et pour les autres prisonniers politiques en Iran

La nuit du 1er mars 2010 des agents infiltrés de la police iranienne faisaient irruption au domicile de Jafar Panahi pour l’arrêter, ainsi que sa femme, sa fille et 15 autres personnes, parmi lesquelles: les metteurs en scène Mohamed Rasoulof, Mahnaz Mohammadi, Rokhsareh Ghaem-Maghami et le cameraman Ebrahim Ghafari.

La raison fournie pour justifier l'arrestation était d’avoir filmé les protestations qui ont suivies les élections de juin 2009, afin de les diffuser.

On est en train d’empêcher les citoyens iraniens d’exprimer démocratiquement leur désaccord. Ceux qui essaient de faire connaitre au monde ce qui se passe sont réduits au silence et privés de leur propre liberté.

La nouvelle de son arrestation et de la détention des autres metteurs en scène a eu des échos en raison de la notoriété internationale de Jafar Panahi, mais Panahi n’est qu’une personne, parmi les milliers arrêtées en raison de leur opposition non violente au régime.Nous nous rappelons en effets que durant les jours qui ont suivi les élections, au moins huit personnes ont été tuées et que des centaines ont été arrêtées et torturées, que les sites internet ont été censurés et que les communications des téléphones portables ont été bloquées.

Nous exprimons notre profonde indignation et demandons aux médias de continuer à donner de la visibilité au problème pour maintenir l’attention de l’opinion publique et des gouvernements axée sur la grave violation des droits humains que l’on perpétue en Iran.

Une forte pression internationale peut aider les personnes qui ont été injustement privées de la liberté, à la retrouver.

En tant que citoyennes et citoyens du monde nous demandons que la liberté de protester, de filmer, d’écrire, de faire opposition et d’agir ouvertement de façon non violente pour le changement politique soit rendue à tous nos concitoyennes et concitoyens.

En tant que citoyennes et citoyens du monde nous demandons, aussi, que la défense des droits de l’homme soit toujours au centre de l’attention politique et non pas en marge, comme cela semble être le cas de l’Iran et d’autres nations.
Nous interpellons la communauté internationale, les organisations sociales et des droits de l’homme, le monde de la culture, les gouvernements, les églises, pour qu’ils réclament avec force la libération du metteur en scène Jafar Panahi et de tous ceux qui ont été arrêtés par le régime Iranien après les élections du mois de juin.

Nous demandons aussi l’arrêt de toute forme de violence et de torture contre le peuple iranien.

La répression et la férocité contre ce peuple sont un outrage à la démocratie et (elles) représentent une violation grave des droits de l’homme.
Nous demandons à tous de signer cet appel que nous enverrons au président Mahmud Ahmadinejad pour exiger la libération immédiate de Panahi et de tous ceux qui sont détenus pour leurs opinions ou pour des raisons politiques.

Nous demandons aussi la fin de la répression contre les représentants des organisations des droits de l’homme et le rétablissement d’un état de droit.
Nous exprimons notre soutien à Shirin Ebadi pour les souffrances qui ont été infligées à elle et à sa famille et pour ce que son pays est en train de subir. Il est nécessaire de résister dans l’Espérance.

The Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, winner of several international awards, was arrested by Iranian security forces at his residence together with his wife, daughter and fifteen guests (artists, actors, directors). A search was conducted in the home and his personal computer was confiscated.

Jafar Panahi is one of the 15 international indipendent filmakers invited to shoot a short movie on tolerance and intercultural dialogue for the long feature Then And Now: Beyond Borders and Differences produced during 2010 by the ART for The World. For this movie, together with his synopsis «Accordion», in January 2010 Jafar Panahi sent the following director’s intention:

I am a social minded film maker and sensitive to every phenomena which occurs in my society and evidently react to it. Perhaps (accordion) is my reaction to the events surrounded me which have been observing them. Obviously religion has strong relation with the roots of the problems. Religion is in the power of running of the country and the judgment an evaluation of ideas becomes “right” or “wrong”, good or bad. Then, who ever relates and close himself to the religion or pretend religions is allowed to enforce the others or demolish the other peoples right.

Accordion is the story of the materialistic needs of human to survive in a pretentious religious. There, one stops a musician of play reasoning for the religious prohibition, while, he himself is forced to do so in order to survive. But the main character of the film is the child or perhaps in my view, he is the symbol of the next generation, in his ideal world he realizes the need of human for survival and then decides to avoid the violence and share his small income with another needed. However he might be much poorer. This mercy is the need of society that I am living there. The society cries for avoiding the violence but the authorities are persuading all roads towards the violence.
Media do not say a thing but frightening and threatening words. This is why the main character of the movie becomes an idealistic figure in a society which violence is enforced. (Jafar Panahi)

SESC São Paulo, a Non Governmental Organization, has a strong history and reputation for cultural and social activities in São Paulo and its region, since 60 years, in promoting social welfare and improving the quality of life and cultural development. SESC São Paulo runs a network of 29 active units in São Paulo and its region, comprising sport centers, medical centers, restaurants, internet centers, TV stations, exhibition spaces, theatres, movie house, etc.

Thanks to the inspiration and enthusiasm of Prof. Danilo Santos de Miranda, Director of the SESC Regional Department, São Paulo, and his staff, SESC and ART for The World have been partners in a great number of cultural projects in the last 12 years, sharing the common ideal to promote an art linked to ethical and social concerns and based on the universal human values.

Beginning of 2010 tightened the partnership between SESC and ART for The World. The group exhibition URBAN MANNERS 2, Contemporary Artists from India, has been in presented one of the most fascinating cultural spaces in Brazil, an ex gigantic factory re-designed by the famous Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi in 1977: the SESC Pompeia, Rua Clélia 93, on January 21. For the Brazilian venue and especially for SESC Pompeia’s premises, a series of works have been selected, presenting 11 emblematic Indian artists and proposing a path that reveals all the striking contradictions of contemporary India. On the occasion of the exhibition artists Sheba Chhachhi and Thukral & Tagra have given a workshop open to the public.

The year 2008 have seen a very tight collaboration between ART for The World and SESC with three major projects:
- In October in Sao Paulo has taken place the world avant-première of ART for The World's first long feature film STORIES ON HUMAN RIGHTS, screened at CINESESC in R. Augusta, 2075. SESC has contributed to this film as partner and has produced the short film 'Voyage', written by the Brazilian filmmakers Valter Salles and Daniela Thomas, who has also directed the film. Also SESCTV and TV Cultura actively partecipated to the circulation, distribution and promotion of STORIES ON HUMAN RIGHTS in Brazil, in South America and Portuguese speaking countries.

- Also in October, the solo show VOOM PORTRAITS by Robert Wilson, has been inaugurated at SESC Pinheiros, Rua Paes Leme 195. It was an exhibition of provocative high-definition video exhibited in several spaces on two floors, during the Biennale of São Paulo. The portraits, including celebrities, artists, intellectuals, animals, are presented on large-scale HD plasma flat-screens, and each work is accompanied by original musical scores by the great composer Michael Galasso. On the occasion of the exhibition, Robert Wilson has given a lecture at SESC Pinheiros Auditorium as well as his play QUARTET with Isabelle Huppert.

- In February, the video installations COLLATERAL When art looks at cinema was presented at SESC Avenida Paulista, following its prior edition at Hangar Bicocca, Milan, in 2007. On this occasion, several workshops have been given by artists in São Paulo and a round table open has been organized, including the participation of Adelina von Fürstenberg, curator of the exhibition, Anna Daneri and Andrea Lissoni, co-curators, artists Pierre Bismuth, Charles de Meaux, Brice Dellsperger, Michel Favre, Melik Ohanian, Carola Spadoni, Cao Guimarães, Carlos Adriano, and Solange Farkas, Director of the Associação Cultural Videobrasil and of the Bahia Museum of Modern Art, Batman Zavarese, and Noah Stolz.

- On March 8, 2007, the Women’s Day, SESC Avenida Paulista, has hosted the opening of the show MULHER, MULHERES (Woman, Women), a cycle of traveling exhibitions, created in 2005 to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Beijing Women Conference. After its first presentation in Geneva, on March 8, 2005, with the title Femme(s), the exhibition Donna Donne was created for the large premises of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. In each venue, the exhibition had different works, reflecting the concept of femininity through a range of approaches and creating dialogues about the role by women in the contemporary world. During the Brazilian edition, few workshops have been organized with the artists.

- In October 2006 BALCAN EROTIC EPIC, video installations by Marina Abramovic, has been presented at SESC Pinheiros. The exhibition follows the larger version BALKAN EPIC, presented at Hangar Bicocca, Milan in the beginning of 2006. On the occasion of the exhibition Marina Abramovic has given a lecture open to the public at SESC Pinehiros Auditorium. She also participated to the Fiteiro Cultural of Brazilian artist Fabiana de Barros, at PUC University, Sao Paulo.

- In 2001, SESC Pompeia has hosted THE OVEREXCITED BODY, ART AND SPORT IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY, with artworks illustrating all aspects of sport, ranging from its educational role to the importance of sport as a focal point where passions, tension and enthusiasm confront each other to produce anthropological changes. This show was under the patronage of the UN as part of their campaign against racial discrimination, explores crucial issues such as tolerance, fighting against discrimination. As an itinerant art project, it was presented in collaboration with La Gazzetta dello Sport, in Milan (Museo dell’Arengario) in March 2001, in June at the Stadium of Geneva and it reached São Paulo in November 2001. For the Brazilian presentation, the exhibition had a large numbers of additional works and performances. Among others, the Free wrestling performance Amorales vs Amorales. The Mexican artist Carlos Amorales has reactivated one of the most important icons of urban popular culture in Mexico, the masked wrestlers. Four of them has performed at the opening evening at the Theater of SESC Pompeia.

- In 1998, SESC’s and ART for The World’s partnership started with the itinerant exhibition THE EDGE OF AWARENESS, organized on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO). More than 40 artists from all five continents created works on themes such as violence, mortality rates, environmental degradation, homelessness, racism, drugs, AIDS and polio, with the aim of stimulate the conscience of the community by raising issues related to health, well-being and the environment.
The exhibition, which opened at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, traveled to New York (PS1 and UN Headquarters), New Delhi (Lalitkala Akademi) and Milan ( Triennale). In São Paulo, the show has been presented at SESC Pompeia.

The Playground has been realized thanks to Mrs Liu Ying Mei, Shanghai, China with the support of the Association des Amis de Chen Zhen, Paris.

The artist is represented by Galleria Continua / Italy, Beijing, Le Moulin.

Chen Zhen strongly believed that art has the power to surpass politics and science, bringing people's feelings to consciousness. Using his wise hands and intense mind, Chen has put at the center of his creations the concern for humanity, society, nature and destiny, his vision of oriental and western cultures, a multi-cultural approach, the desire of eliminating odium through an equality-based dialogue.

The installation Danser la musique by Chen Zhen is composed by a square trampoline, four large Buddhist bells with cannon shells hanging in its four corners, hundreds of smaller bells with bullet shells hanging on the trampoline, Children dance on the trampoline and the sound of the music coming from the bells.

From 2000 on, ART for The World has organized a serie of travelling exhibitions of more then 40 artworks on the theme of Playgrounds&Toys designed by artists and architects from all over the world. In every place in which the exhibition is held, a local jury choose his favorite playground. In January 2001, during the venue at the Andersen Museum in Rome, Chen Zhen's project Danser la Musique was chosen from a jury composed by UN, UNHCR and UNESCO’s representatives, Giordano Boetti, the son of the artist Alighiero Boetti and the Children Psycanalist Prof. Giovanni Bollea.

Danser la Musique aims to combine both the form and the function of dance and music. The work expresses the artist’s concern for disadvantaged children suffering from social injustices and for those living in the most unacceptable conditions in various regions of the world. The hope is that this playground will help to turn sorrow into happiness, making children still feel the joy and strength of life while facing poverty and war.

The children dancing on the trampoline make the brass bells strike against each other and against the small bells placed on the ground, creating a fantastic and happy music. Four people can play the big buddhists bells at the four corners of the trampoline, giving life to the big dancing musical instrument and intensifying the theme of the work, which exemplifies a material world that is within sight but beyond reach. The "bell tone" of the church and the "thunder" of guns arise one from another, as in the unavoidable reality in which live many children of numerous countries and regions of the world. The brilliant and sweet rings of the little bells, together with the sounds and rhythms of happy dancing, awake their innocence and senses, relieving their little hearts from the despair of poverty and war. Danser la Musique is a playground resonating with joy and awareness.

Artist’s biography
Chen Zhen was born in 1955 in Shanghai where he studied and then taught at the Shanghai Fine Arts & Crafts School and at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. In 1986, he moved to France where he studied at the Institut des Hautes Etudes en Arts Plastiques of Paris. He then worked as Professor at the Institut and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris and at the Ecole Nationale Superieure D'Art in Nancy. Between 1990 and 2000, Chen was awarded six art scholarships from French and American institutions and participated to nearly one hundred exhibitions, where he presented internationally acclaimed installations. He was listed as one of the most influential installation artist of the Nineties. His unrestricted style walks through the Chinese and western cultures, seeking a balance between unifying the senses of the audience and presenting the artist’s unique language and philosophy. Chen’s work brings to the extreme the idea of diversity that pervaded the art world during the last years of his life.

ART for The World’s activities are based on the ideals of Human Rights, Dignity, Freedom, Peace and Solidarity enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as proclaimed as fundamental values by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Therefore, since its foundation, ART for The World’s major commitment has been to organize events (art exhibitions, cinema, concerts, conferences and lectures, etc.) in close collaboration with the artists' community and with the international institutions such as the United Nations, the World Health Organization (WHO), the High Commissioner for Refugees (HCR), the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of Europe, as well as NGOs such as SESC Sao Paulo, or Deepalaya Foundation in New Delhi.

ART for The World is a direct outgrowth of the exhibition Dialogues of Peace conceived to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations in 1995. From then onwards, many projects have been organized in collaboration with international institutions to foster the defense and knowledge of Human Rights around the world. ART for The World’s initiatives indissolubly join aesthetic as well as humanitarian purposes, with a view to raising public attention on the issues that stir up our society:

2008 Stories on Human Rights

Born under the auspices of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights – Stories on Human Rights is a film project created and produced in 2008 by ART for The World on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The long feature is composed by 22 short-movies by filmmakers and artists from all over the world (S. Bodrov, Z. Jia, P. Trapero, A. Weerasethakul, M. Abramovic, A. Sissako, etc.). Each short is based on one of the themes highlighted in the Universal Declaration: culture, development, dignity and justice, environment, gender and participation. The film has been screened in approximately 50 festivals around the world as well as in museums, in cultural institutions and in public screenings in different cities around the word.

2005-07 Donna Donne

Donna Donne is a cycle of traveling contemporary art exhibitions on gender issue, conceived in 2005 to mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Beijing Conference. Focused on the implications of the social and political role of women in contemporary culture, the exhibition was hosted in different cities and premises: in Florence (Palazzo Strozzi, 2005), in Geneva (Musèe de Carouge, 2005) and in Sao Paulo (SESC Avenida Paulista, 2007) and involved young as well as well-known artists from all over the world (G. Amer, W. Du, S. Fleury, N. Goldin, Kimsooja, Y. Pei-Ming, T. Moffatt, S. Neshat, etc.)

2001 The Overexcited Body

(Milan, Sao Paulo)

The Overexcited Body focuses on all aspects of sports, from the role of educating young people to their importance as a common ground where passion, tension, and enthusiasm have clashed to produce social and anthropological changes, and opened up to exchanges and encounters with the different cultures of our globalized world. The exhibition displayed a series of contemporary works by international artists (J. Armleder, N. Hirakawa, J. Kosuth, G. Toderi, N.Ward, P. di Bello, etc.) and was presented in Milan (Palazzo dell’Arengario and Velodrom Vigorelli), in Geneva (Stadium de la Praille) and in Sao Paulo (SESC Pompeia).

2000-01 Alfredo Jaar, The Silence - The Rwanda Project

(Geneva)

The Silence by Alfredo Jaar – exhibition organized at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees – was hosted in Geneva at International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. The photos installation derived from the artist's experiences in Rwanda in 1994, where he travelled to record the testimonies of the survivors of a genocide that claimed the lives of one million people.

2000 onwards Playgrounds&Toys

In 2000, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, ART for The World has conceived the project Playgrounds & Toys for Refugee Children, and since then has built playgrounds designed by artists and designers in differents premises around the world: India, Armenia, UK, Greece, among others.

2000 Art and Social Realities

(Geneva)

Within the context of the Geneva 2000 International Summit on Social Development, Art and Social Realities is an interdisciplinary project organized in collaboration with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and dealing with the themes of refugees, emigration and exclusion. The exhibition, hosted by the Visitors Centre of the High Commissioner for refugees, featured the works by the artists Vito Acconcia and Kim Sooja, the architect Shigeru Ban and the photographer Gilles Delmas.

1998-99 The Edge of Awareness

(Geneva, New York, Sao Paulo, New Delhi)

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization, ART for The World was invited to present in 1998-99 an international itinerant exhibition of contemporary art, to be shown in Geneva (WHO headquarters), New York (UN building, P.S.1), São Paulo (SESC Pompeia) and New Delhi (Lalitkala Akademi). The works on show raised vital questions about issues such as violence, mortality rates, natural disasters, environmental degradation, homelessness, racism, drugs, AIDS, polio. Among the participating artists: V. Acconci, F.De Barros, Kcho, H. Hakansson, I. Kabakov, Sol LeWitt, P. Steir, etc.

1995 Dialogues of Peace

(Geneva)

Dialogues of Peace was organized on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations at the UN headquarters in Geneva. In this exhibition, sixty artists from all over the world (R. Rauschenberg, C. Zhen, T. Kawamata, P. Kirkeby, etc.) presented works dedicated to the encouragement of tolerance and solidarity through the universal language of art for a peaceful coexistence between people. Dialogues of Peace was the starting point for ART for The World's future action: to develop a new and creative forms of collaboration between artists, institutions and other members of the international community towards a meaningful dialogue between people of different cultures.
